1. Save the Earth from Pollution
For centuries now, mankind has turned a deaf ear to the pleas to save the mother earth. In the name of development, natural resources have been misused and now mankind is standing on the brink of ecological disaster. Now the time has come when mankind must listen because air pollution has never been as bad as it is now. More automobiles and factories are operating around us today than before. But even as we benefit from them, we must ensure that the very air we breathe remains empoisoned. Alarming signals are emerging in our cities. Hundreds of tones of suspended particulates (chemicals, toxic and non-toxic substances) are released into the atmosphere every day. This poisonous waste ends up in our lungs and severely affects our health. Some of it passes into our bloodstream to set into motion a slow but irreversible process of decay and disease in the body. The time to act is now before it is too late. We may not be able to prevent deforestation but we can plant a few trees in our neighborhood.

2. People Are Like Potatoes

Yes, People are like potatoes. After potatoes have been harvested they have to be spread out and sorted in order to get the maximum market price. They are divided according to their size—big, medium and small. It is only after potatoes have been sorted and bagged that they are loaded onto trucks. But there was one farmer who never bothered to sort the potatoes at all. A neighbor finally asked him, “What is your secret?” The farmer replied, “It is simple. I just load up the wagon with potatoes and take the roughest road to town. During the six-mile trip, the little potatoes always fall to the bottom. The medium potatoes land in the middle, while the big potatoes rise to the top.” That is not only true of potatoes. It is a law of nature. Big potatoes rise to the top on rough roads and tough people rise to the top in rough times. Though time never lasts but tough people do.
3. The Evolution of Cinema
The Cinema came to India at the turn of this century. First, films had no sound. The Raj brought the Cinematography to India in 1896 and by 1901 we were making our own films. India at present produces the largest number of movies every year. ‘Alam Ara’ was the first Indian talkie released in 1931. One of the earliest documentaries shot “The Return of the Wrangler Parajpe”, the celebration of a Maharashtrian who had secured a top degree in Mathematics at Cambridge. Then through the 20s and 30s to the 90s we have moved through social films, romance, entertainment, sex and violence. From small screen films we have progressed to 70 mm., 3D (Three dimensional and ‘Surround sound’ screen films. The films have great impact on the tastes and attitude of the masses. The cinema is the most popular means of entertainment in our country. The invent and popularity of Television have been affecting the film industry badly. But inspite of that cinema has not lost its importance.
4. How to Fight Terrorism
Our deadly weapon against terrorism is our eyes. Let us be alert and keep our eyes open for any unidentifiable, unclaimed objects, for suspicious-looking strangers and any sign of unusual activity. If we see anything amiss, we should approach the nearest policeman, police station or contact the nearest Gypsy. If we are in Delhi, we can dial phone no. 100. Our alertness can prevent a disaster thus striking a big blow to terrorism. We can also earn a reward of up to Rs.50, 000. In a democratic country, it is the sympathy and co-operation of the general public, which is the most important factor. An alert, watchful public is a strong deterrent to anti- national and anti-social activities. We must fight unitedly against terrorism. This is our social and moral duty also. Our unity, co-operation and love are the greatest safety against anti-national elements. We should cooperate with each other without paying any attention towards caste, religion or province.
5. Happiness Shared Is Happiness Multiplied
Happiness lies in the mind of a man as beauty lies in the eyes of a beholder. In other words we can say that happiness comprises a state of mind. It lies in our attitude towards life. One thousand rupees can give happiness to a poor man while they have no importance for a millionaire. There is a Chinese proverb in this connection: “There is nothing like a little land well tilled; a little house well filled; and a little wife well willed.” So the source of happiness lies within our own selves. It is a matter of approach, a matter of feeling. Health and happiness go hand in hand. When we do some good work, which gives happiness to others, our own happiness also increases by leaps and bounds. One way of doing this is to find out, and go out to those who may be in need of our help. While the person we help should feel grateful to us, we should also feel grateful to him for his being instrumental in giving happiness to us. The highest form of happiness is derived when we help others and give happiness to them. This is the reason why in every religion great importance is given to service of the poor, needy and diseased persons.
6. My Hobby

The word ‘hobby’ denotes work done during one’s leisure time. It is different from work proper, since it is pursued to get rid of boredom and to refresh one’s mind after exhausting physical or mental work. There are many kinds of hobbies like reading, sports, gardening, photography etc. But my hobby is stamp collecting. I started collecting stamps in my childhood and gradually I developed my hobby. Now I exchange stamps with my friends and make purchases even in the market. I have joined a number of Philatelic Societies. Thus I have collected about three thousand stamps of different countries and various denominations. Most of these stamps are of a rare variety and I have arranged them in a number of albums in a systematic manner. I have stamps, which delineate great men of history, a country’s historical events, its flora and fauna, its achievements in different fields etc. Some stamps depict great festivals or great international days or events. I spend my leisure-time among my lovely stamps and forget all worries of the world.
