Short Paragraph on Comptroller and Auditor General of India – Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) is the constitutional guardian of the public purse. Besides the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary, the CAG is the fourth pillar of the Indian Constitution.
He helps legislature to maintain a control over the financial activities of the government. He is appointed by the President, but can be removed only in like manner and on like grounds as a Judge of the Supreme Court. His term of office is 6 years or up to the age of 65, whichever is earlier. His salary and conditions of service cannot be varied to his disadvantage during his tenure. The CAG is required to ensure that Centre and State Governments spend money in the manner authorized by the respective Legislatures or Parliament. He audits Government accounts. He also submits report to the President who causes it to be laid before the Parliament. He is the friend, philosopher and guide of the Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament.
