1. Our School Library
The school library, a treasure house of knowledge, is a busy place. Students of all classes visit it in the recess or library periods. Our school library is housed in two rooms. In one room are placed big almirahs, full of books. The other room serves as the reading room. Magazines, journals and newspapers are placed there. There are about 5,000 books in our library which are arranged according to their subject matter. Any book can be traced within no time. The books cater to the needs and interests of the students of all age- groups. There are biographies, novels, short story collections, tales of adventure, scientific discoveries, books of poems and plays, etc. in our library. There are two separate sections in the library. One of them contains reference books like dictionaries, encyclopedia and other technical books for teachers. The other section contains books that are meant only for students. Every student has a library card. The reading room is crowded during the recess period. Most of the boys simply look at the pictures in newspapers and magazines. However, there are a few students who are serious readers. I visit it everyday without fail. I learn something new almost daily and thus enrich my knowledge.
2. A Street Quarrel
ADVERTISEMENTS:
One day I went to the market to buy vegetables. I saw a crowd of people standing in front of a shop. I rushed to the spot to find out what was up there. I found that some people were exchanging hot words. I learnt that a customer had bought 10 metres of cloth from a cloth dealer and when he went home he discovered that the dealer had given him ten yards. But the shopkeeper now told him that goods once sold could not be returned. They started arguing. In the meantime, a large number of people gathered there. They intervened in the matter. Some sided with the customer while others sided with the shopkeeper. From hot words the customer and the shopkeeper came to blows. At last some people separated them. The shopkeeper’s nose began to bleed. Somebody rang up the police. Soon a policeman reached the noisy scene. He interrogated the people about the matter and took both the customer and the shopkeeper to the police station. The crowd that had gathered there then melted away.
3. Tea
Tea is a very common beverage all over the world these days. It is nourishing as well as refreshing. It grows in hilly areas. Its plant is very small. Tealeaves are generally of two colours—black and green. They are available in packets of different size. Tea is prepared by putting a few leaves into boiling water. After a little stirring, milk and sugar are mixed with it. Some people like to add a little salt instead of sugar and some take tea without milk. Some would like to have tea with a little lemon instead of milk. Tea growing has now become a large industry. Some of the best tea gardens in India are found in the Kangra Valley and Assam. It’s interesting to see men and women plucking tealeaves. Thousands of workers depend on tea business. People generally take tea in the morning or in the evening. But in India every time is teatime. Whenever a guest drops in, he expects to be entertained with tea. After a day’s hard work, a cup of tea is very refreshing. When taken hot, it gives warmth to the body. It is also sometimes used as a medicine for cold and fever. But too much tea is harmful.
4. A Period without Teacher
There is a famous saying, ‘When the cat is away, the mice will play.’ The same happens in the class when the teacher is not present in the class. Students feel quite free and comfortable without the teacher and the rein of discipline is loosed. Friends start gossiping with each other. Some naughty boys even indulge in mock fighting in which they use pieces of chalk as arrows. Some students who are fond of singing, start humming. A completely different world and atmosphere emerges in the class in which studies have rather no place. Only a few students concentrate on their studies in the absence of a teacher. Some naughty and mischievous boys start making strange noise or copy various animals’ voices. But the real fun of a class room can be enjoyed in the absence of a teacher only. Because it is the time when all the students take off there masks of discipline and exhibit their real naughty personality.
5. Environment and Health Education
ADVERTISEMENTS:
The concept of education should be drastically changed to create an awareness regarding environment protection. This is the only way to lay the foundation for a new world for the coming generations. It is disturbing to find that the younger generation is still unaware about various aspects of environment protection. The world is heading towards a state of doom. The resources of nature are being mercilessly plundered leading to the disturbance of ecological balance. It is very surprising that though the state of doom is writ large there is no sense of doom among the people yet. The environment protection could only be done properly by teaching the subject at the school level. The general public should also be educated about the ways and means of environmental protection. If the people realize that they are not going to survive, they will act swiftly to protect the environment. Checking the population growth is a must for protecting the environment. It is necessary to maintain balance between the demand and the available resources. This can be done by adopting family planning.
