The mother tongue of the Bengalis is different from the mother tongue of the Maharashtra. The mother tongue of the Punjabis is different from the mother tongue of the Tamils. If a Tamil Ian goes to Bengal the language he has to use for communication is only English. Many of us Indians know English. We study English in our schools and colleges. In our colleges English is the medium of instruction. In the technical institutions, in the engineering colleges and in the medical colleges English is the medium of instruction. So far there are no regional language textbooks for the engineering and medical colleges.
English is the unifying language in India. It is a fact that Hindi is spoken by many in India. Efforts are being made to give the status of national language to Hindi. But only people in the north India are proficient in Hindi. Hindi has to be learnt by every citizen of India if it should become the national language.

English has come to stay as one of our own languages. There are scores of writers writing in English. There are many Indians who have achieved international acclaim by writing novels in English. English is the legacy bequeathed to us by the British. We should thank them for giving us the gift of the English language, an international language.
The greatest service the British did to us is that they have left us the priceless legacy of English. English as an international language has benefited us in many ways and it is undoubted that with our knowledge of English we are able to seek employment outside our country and earn well. In Germany, in Japan, in China and in some other countries English is not the medium of instruction in the educational institutions as in our country, – and the graduates and the postgraduates in these countries are handicapped in seeking a job in the USA or England.
