Sir,
Despite increased awareness, the specter of dowry still looms large. Is there no easy answer to this question?
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Women’s right to equal inheritance and equal control over property must be translated from paper law into concrete fact, to affect any meaningful change in the status of women as daughters and wives. People often give dowry instead of giving a share in property.
This is one of the reasons why girls themselves are not willing to forgo dowry, even as a matter of principle.
Dowry has become a menace ritual in itself and parents see in it their status and honour as being involved.
So, unless a family really cannot afford to give both, dowry will continue to remain as an issue for those with no property.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
The real issue is to ensure that women live with dignity and independence. But clearly something more is needed.
Yours faithfully,
