Lakes in India are mainly found in mountainous or coastal regions. The plains have few lakes. On the basis of their origin, they can be classified as under:
i. Tectonic Lakes:
Wular Lake (Kashmir), Kumayun Lakes.
ii. Lakes Formed due to Volcanic Activity:

iv. Glacial Lakes:
Khurpataal, Sambal, Punataal, Malwa Tal, Nainitaal Rakastaal, Saataal, Bhimtaal, Navkuchiataal (all Kumayun Himalayas).
v. Lakes Formed Due to Aeolean Process:
Sambhar, Panchphidra Luna Kransar, Didwana (Rajasthan).
