Legal Provisions of Section 472 of Indian Penal Code, 1860.
Making or possessing counterfeit seal, etc., with intent to commit forgery punishable under section 467:
Making or possession of counterfeit seal etc. with the intention of committing forgery punishable under section 467 of the Code has been punished under this section. The section states that whoever makes or counterfeits any seal, plate or other instrument for making an impression, with the intention that the same shall be used for the purpose of committing any forgery which would be punishable under section 467 of the Code, or with such intention has in his possession any such seal, plate or other instrument, with the knowledge that the same was counterfeit, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with simple or rigorous imprisonment for a term extending up to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine.

Making or counterfeiting a seal, plate or other instrument for making an impression must be proved against the offender. While doing so the offender must have the intention that the same shall be used for the purpose of committing any forgery which would be punishable under section 467 of the Code. Or, the offender, with such intention, must have in his possession any such seal, plate or other instrument with the knowledge that the same was counterfeit.
This section is similar to sections 235, 255 and 256 of the Code. By punishing the mere possession the section has made preparation to commit a crime an offence under the latter part of this section. The offence under this section is very serious as is clear from the quantum of punishment prescribed by the section.
The offence under section 472 is cognizable, non-bailable and non-compoundable, and is triable by magistrate of the first class.
