Legal Provisions of Section 156 of Indian Penal Code, 1860.
Liability of agent of owner or occupier for whose benefit riot is committed:
This section imposes liability on the agent or manager of the owner or occupier of land for whose benefit a riot is committed. It states that whenever a riot is committed for the benefit or on behalf of the owner or occupier of a land, or who claims any interest in such land, or in the subject of any dispute which gave rise to the riot, or who has obtained any benefit out of it, the agent or manager of such person shall be punishable with fine the amount of which is to be decided by the court, if such agent or manager had reason to believe that a riot was likely to be committed, or that the unlawful assembly which committed the riot was likely to be held, shall not use all lawful means in his power to prevent such riot or assembly from taking place or for suppressing or dispersing the same. This section should be read along with sections 154 and 155 of the Code.
