Section 174 of Indian Penal Code:
Intentional non-attendance, in obedience to a summons, notice, order or proclamation proceeding from a public servant or Court of Justice in person or by agent, or having attended, departing before it is lawful to depart—simple imprisonment upto one month or fine upto Rs. 500 or both, simple imprisonment upto six months or fine upto Rs. 1,000 or both where the breach pertains to Court (Section 174).

Verbal order is sufficient but it must be specific as to the title of the Court, the date, time and place of attendance whether it is oral or written. Service must be personal. A, being legally bound to appear before the High Court at Calcutta in obedience to a subpoena issuing from that Court, intentionally omits to appear.
A has committed the offence defined in this section. A, being legally bound to appear before a District Judge, as a witness, in obedience to a summons issued by that District Judge, intentionally omits to appear. A has committed the offence defined in this section.
