An attempt to comprehend the behaviour of people in group settings helps us to understand behaviour of employees in organizations including educational institutions.
People need not be a member of one group only. They can simultaneously hold memberships of more than one group such as family, club, peer-group, work group, sports group, music group, literary group and so on. Some of these group; are loosely knit associations of people, some groups are informal.
On the other hand, some groups are formally established in a work organization; some are very closely bound groups. It is also possible that a person’s membership in one group may influence his/her behaviour as a member in another group.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
The behaviour of individual members can influence and are influenced by the group. In order to understand the behaviour of people in organizations, it is necessary to comprehend the factors influencing individuals as well as how individuals influence the organization. The behaviour of individual members in a work group has a strong effect on performance of the group which in turn influences institutional performance.
From a managerial perspective, the work group is the primary means through which institutional goals can be attained using co-ordinate behaviour and efforts of individual members. Managers not only direct the activities of teachers but also direct and co-ordinate the interactions among people in work groups.
Thus, in order to improve teacher performance and effectiveness, the principal of the institution must pay attention to both the individual and the group. They must be aware of individual and group needs, the dynamics of interpersonal relationships so as to manage groups effectively and efficiently. A group’s effectiveness or otherwise depends on behaviour of individuals.
