Importance of attendance are given below:
Continued attendance is a pre-requisite for desirable progress and development of students. If the home-back-ground and motivation of a student are conducive to learning, a student may be able to pass an examination.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
However, the aim of schooling is not just passing an examination but also to bring about affective and psycho-motor development of students. Without adequate and un-interrupted attendance, a school will not be in a position to fulfill its aims.
Desirable, positive attitudes towards the school, peers, teachers and curriculum play an important role in the all-round development of students. Attendance in school facilitates development of these desirable attitudes in them.
Regular attendance leads to intangible benefits of schooling such as development of acceptable forms of social behaviour, learning of societal culture, character formation, a sense of responsibility, democratic living, learning various roles necessary for future adult life, and so forth.
Lack of regular attendance leads to poor utilization of school’s infrastructural facilities such as school building, equipment, etc. This lowers the efficiency of school and thereby leads to wastage. Poor attendance also results in poor performance in examination.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
This is another form of wastage in education. These forms of wastages are avoidable in nature. Poor attendance also lowers the morale of teachers as their energy, time and efforts are wasted.
Moreover, according to the Maharashtra Secondary School code, grants given to schools depend on an average daily attendance of not less than 30 students in urban areas and 25 students in rural areas.
Block grants also depend on average attendance of the school as a unit for preceding three years. Thus, poor attendance of a few students will lead to a reduction or complete lack of grant-in-aid thereby adversely affecting regular students also.
In order for being eligible to appear for examinations, rules necessitate compulsory attendance for a specified number of days. Thus, regular attendance is extremely important from educational as well as administrative perspectives.
