1. Extortion is the aggravated form of theft. It may change into robbery under certain circumstances. In extortion a person is forced to deliver any property against his will when he is put in fear of injury to himself or another and is dishonestly induced to deliver the property. Robbery is the aggravated form of extortion. It consists extortion + presence of the offender + fear of instant violence + immediate delivery of property.
2. Extortion includes blackmailing. Robbery may be converted into dacoity, if the number of persons is increased to five.

3. The element of fear exists in both and there is delivery of property by the victim in both.
4. Punishment for extortion is lower than robbery (i.e., 3 years and/or fine) while the punishment for robbery is higher than extortion (i.e., 10 to 14 years and also fine).
