The important types of Animal world present in the animal kingdom are:
1. Chordata:
Animals with notochord present at some stage in the life history. This is a flexible rod of tightly packed, vacuolated cells held together with a firm sheath. In vertebrates notochord is present only in embryonic stage. Organisms are bilaterally symmetrical.
2. Agnatha – (Jawless vertebrates):
These are parasites on other fishes. Ex: Lamprey. These are considered as living fossils.
3. Chondrichthyes (Cartiloginous fish):
These marine forms having 5 pairs of gills. Skin is covered with placoid scales. Air bladder is absent and there is no external ear. These are cold blooded animals (poikilothermic) Ex: Sharks, dog fish, scates and rays.
4. Osteichthyes – (Bony fishes):
These are cold blooded, 2 chambered heart with 4 pairs of gills. The skeleton is bony and the skin is covered with cycloid scales. These are cold blooded animals (poikilothermic) Ex-Hilsa fish
5. Amphibians:
These are freshwater forms with 3 chambered hearts. Soft moist skin can be used for gaseous exchange to supplement lungs. No scales are present. Metamorphosis occurs from larva to adult in life cycle. These are cold blooded animals (poikilothermic) Ex: Frog, salamander and toad.
6. Reptiles:
These are cold blooded animals with scaly outer skin. Heart is 3 chambered except in crocodile where it is 4 chambered. These are cold blooded animals (Poikilothermic) Ex-snakes, lizards, alligators, crocodile, turtles and tortoise
7. Aves:
The feathered animals, birds.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Have feathers and ability to fly. Feathers are modified scales derived from reptilia. Weight is reduced due to hollow bones. Heart is 4 chambers. These are warm blooded animals (homoeothermic) Ex: Peacock, sparrow.
8. Mammalia:
Milk producing animals.
i. Presence of hair on body and sweat glands are present.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
ii. External ear, 4 chambered heart.
iii. These are warm blooded animals (homeothermic)
