Culturally India is very rich in hospitality our concept of hospitality is based on the dictum of ‘Atithi Devo Bhav’ which means that the guest equals the God and it is His blessing on us if we receive a guest. Therefore, even today accord a friendly reception and generous treatment to our guests.
Many different forms of accommodation are available to the modern tourist. Holiday accommodation is available to the modern tourist. Holiday accommodation may be classified into four main categories.

1. Service including hotels, pensions, guest and boarding hoses.
2. Self-catering accommodation including camping, caravans, rented flats and houses.
3. Homes of friends and relatives where no payment is made for the use of accommodation.
4. Other accommodation including boats, youth hostels, etc.

The UN Conference of International Travel and Tourism held in Rome in 1963 considered, inter alia, the problems of accommodation. In recognised the importance of means of accommodation, both traditional (hotel, motels) and supplementary (camps, youth hostels) as incentives to international tourism. The conference recommenced that governments should establish special corporations for tourism.
Hotels and motels constitute the largest sector of accommodation. Hotels and motels are similar except that motels are roadside hotels with parking space to accommodate travelling tourists.

Supplementary accommodation includes accommodations for tourists but not necessarily hotel services. It includes government rest houses, tourist bungalows, dak bungalows, youth hostels, dharamshalas, etc.
Accommodation may also be classified into two sectors: the commercial sector which includes hotels, motels, guest houses and supplementary sector to cover all others forms of accommodation.
The supplementary sector includes private permanent residences used for hosting friends and relatives and second homes i.e., a permanent building which is the occasional residence of a household that usually lives elsewhere and which is mainly used for recreational purposes.
Camps and caravans may constitute an intermediate category where in private tents or caravans are sited in commercial camping grounds.
Apart from the traditional accommodation provided by hotels, flexible and functional forms such as rented apartments are available. Flexibility in ownership is also apparent.
Resort apartments or condominiums in many places may be purchased out right or may be arranged on a time-sharing basis where by a series of owners acquire rights to a property for specified periods of the year.
