I live in Gwalior. It is a historical city. It is the capital of Madhya Pradesh. It has been the witness of the rise and fall of empires. Gwalior is associated with the heroic Rani of Jhansi. It is a beautiful city. It is a curious mixture of old and new. Located in the northern-most part of Madhya Pradesh, it offers a feast of heroic sights, museums, parks, shops, cultural programmes and cuisines.
Gwalior was established in the 8th century A.D. It was named after Saint Galina. The city is dominated by its hilltop fort, a symbol of Rajput valour and chivalry. The 15th century palace of Raja Mansingh is located in the citadel. The fort also houses Telika Mandir. It is an ancient temple. There is also a beautiful gurudwara of the sixth guru of the sikhs—Guru Hargobind.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Gajri Mahal, which is at the foot of the fort, has one of the first museums of sculpture in the country. Gwalior has also the distinction of being a centre of Indian classical music. Tansen, one of the nine jewels of the court of Emperor Akbar the Great is buried at Gwalior. Every year a great musical festival is held to commemorate this great singer.
Gwalior has been the centre of power. It is associated with Syndhias. There are numerous palaces, forts and buildings which narrate the grand past of the city. These are great attractions for the tourists. They are good source of revenue earnings. The whole structure of the city offers a glimpse of the glorious past. In addition, the well-maintained park and street light, the well regulated traffic system, and disciplined public are features which make it an attractive city. People are well-behaved in Gwalior. There is decency in public life. People always follow rules and regulations in their life. They respect their elders. They extend a helping hand to those who need help. There is a sense of duty in everyone. Whether you go to post office, bank, or collectorate, work is done properly. Corruption is not as rampant as it is in other parts of the country.
The most important thing about the city that I like is its lush green surroundings and clean environment. There is greenery everywhere. There are beautiful gardens and parks in Gwalior. On the one hand they offer visual delight; on the other they make the environment healthy. Therefore, pollution is not a problem in Gwalior as it is in other parts of the country. After day’s hard work walking in a park is relieving and refreshing. It removes all the tension. It gives energy and enthusiasm. The city is surrounded by some major tourist’s spots like Orchcha, Shivpuri, etc. which is loveliest places near the city. Thus, the city has abundance of things which make it a city of my choice. I love my city.
