She joined the Loreto Missionary. Later she sailed to India to serve as a teacher in the schools of the Missionary. When she was aboard a train to Darjeeling in India the call of God inspired her to dedicate herself for the service of the poor and the lowly.
In 1950 Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity. She opened her first Home of Charity, called Nirmal Hriday in 1955. People did not like a Christian doing social service in their midst. But she was not dissuaded from continuing her social service. Over a period of some decades Mother Teresa opened centres of social service one after another and they numbered one hundred and sixty. These included the homes for the dying destitute, charitable dispensaries and homes for the leprosy patients, homes for the orphaned children etc. She often said that the main defect in the human beings was the lack of compassion in them.
