A person says his father or mother is at home and not in his house. A person says this sweet is home-made and not made or prepared in his house. From these expressions we may understand that home has a special connotation. But we say ‘household,’ ‘housekeeper,’ ‘houseboy,’ ‘housebound’ etc. but these words do not indicate the emotional associations of a home. We say, ‘I should go home quickly,’ and the ‘home’ here denotes a sweet association with it. We say ‘it is a home away from home’ and not ‘it is a house away from our house.’
‘Our home’ denotes a sense of pride, a sense of belonging to the dear parents, sisters, brothers or relatives. ‘At-home’ means a social reception in a person’s home, ‘home-felt’ means ‘felt intimately’, ‘home-bird’ means a person who likes to stay at home’, ‘homeland’ means ‘one’s native land’, ‘home town’ means ‘one’s native town’.

Our home is a sweet home. My father is the Secretary of the Health Department in the Government of Tamil Nadu. My mother is the headmistress of a high school. I have one brother and one sister. My brother is aged 20. He is studying in a medical college. He specializes in pediatrics. My sister has just completed her high school education. She wants to take up the engineering course. She has interest in computer science. She wants to become a software engineer. Our uncle is in USA. My sister wants to join a big software engineering company and wants to go to USA and work as a software engineer in a foreign company. Some of her friends have gone abroad to work as software engineers. So, now itself she dreams of becoming a software engineer. I am the eldest. I am employed as a lecturer in English in the Nandavaram College. I am very much interested in English. I have been contributing articles to the newspapers and the magazines.
While my father sometimes returns home late in the evening my mother comes home by 6 p.m. most of the days. My younger brother will be completing his medical studies in two years. He wants to set up a clinic and do independent practice. My sister shows much promise in her studies and we hope she will make a mark in her career.
My mother undertakes tuition in the evening for some students. We have a cook and two servants permanently at home. The servants buy the provisions, vegetables and other essential things. They are very reliable. My parents have no worry about the household management. Of course they supervise the household activities and see to it that everything is in order.
