India had long been the land of epidemics, small pox, cholera, malaria, typhoid and many other diseases took their toll due to insufficient medical facilities, ignorance and poverty of the masses.
Infant mortality rate was alarming and the life expectancy was merely 32 years in 1951. Despite efforts made by the Government to provide adequate health services to the people the goal has not been achieved because of the fast growing population.
It is a well known fact that only healthy people make a healthy nation. It is very important that people should be free from disease and enjoy good health. Otherwise they will not be able to develop.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
In a poor and developing country like India the problem of providing proper medical facilities to citizens is very grave. Because of poverty people were not able to eat nutritious food.
They were not supplied good drinking water. It used to be contaminated. Proper cleanliness in the villages, towns and cities could not be ensured. As a result, there were epidemics which claimed large number of lives. Those who fell ill could not be given immediate and proper treatment. Many died untimely death. All this put the nation to a great loss.
Why did it happen like this? The answer is very simple. When there was not enough to eat how could other things like good medical attention etc. could be provided.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
The main reason behind this situation was our large population. Over the years, the government has done a great deal of work for the benefit of masses, to save them from fatal disease like T.B., Cancer, Goitre, Malaria, Leprosy, Smallpox, Filaria, Sexually Transmitted diseases, blindness etc.
Despite the above efforts made by the government, even today people are not having adequate medical facilities, nutritional food and most of the dangerous diseases still prevail in the country.
When the population keeps on growing without substantial increase in the productivity, government fails to meet the challenge. Therefore, it is most essential that population growth is checked. Population has indeed a very adverse impact on the health of people.
