Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish poet, essayist, travel writer and novelist.
Stevenson is a well known celebrity of his time and he is ranked the 26th most translated authors in the world. Stevenson suffered from weak chests and cold climates when he was a childhood and it did continue even when he grew up.
Since he was not fit most of the time, his schoolings were delayed. However, his interests in stories were with him from a very small age and he used to recite stories to his mother even before of the age of seven.
Stevenson did his first publication when he was sixteen. He was a traveler and had traveled a lot. His travels gave him the ideas for writing and the subject that he was always in the look out for.

“A Good Boy” is a simple poem by Stevenson and just depicts the simple day to day activities a small boy would follow. However he has also reflected his childhood days through this poem.
In this poem, the poet says that he wakes up at dawn and tries to be a good boy through out the day. He never tries to speak a bad word and always stick to his games and play.
When the sun goes down and when the day is about to end, he feels happy for himself and he makes sure that he stays good and makes others also feel the same.
At bedtime, he makes sure that he does not forget his prayers and thanks giving. He has a set of routine that he follows and follows, a time to sleep in his soft, linen laid bed.

Till he wakes the next day morning, he would not like to have any nightmares nor see any sight that he does not desire or frighten him. His sleep holds him tight till he sees the next day dawn and hears the birds chirping.
Since Stevenson was raised by a nurse who was strict and very religious, he also had to follow certain routines that he recalls when he has grown up and depicts it in his poems.
A poem that could be read to every child, to make the child understand the importance of being good and how one should follow the day, even though you may be naughty at times.
