In the poem “The Moment”, Margaret Atwood has beautifully described the importance of work and struggle in human life as compared to lying back and just loving your accomplishments. The poetess lays due importance on the fact that if one always wants to be a part of the universe, he or she is expected by the universe itself to be working constantly.
Even the universe is not in favour of a lazy person. When you struggle vehemently to be a part and parcel of something, you are as a matter of fact an active part of the universe which can achieve every possible dream. It is essential to be mobile in life, to constantly discover new things instead of thinking that I have achieved enough, I just need some rest. Going on holidays is fine but a long holiday i.e. getting rid from work leads to self -destruction.
The poem has a very deep meaning because the readers are made aware of the fact that we are extremely lucky to be living on Planet Earth. It is said that a relationship is like a shark, if you do not move fast it will stop working. Similarly, life without work will stop moving, if you have no work, you are next to a dead person.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Satisfaction with what you have is good and extremely essential but thinking that you have conquered it all is a road block to your ladder of success. There is no limit to exploring and also there is no limit to finding new hobbies and passions to achieve in your life. As a matter of fact, it is essential to formulate new goals in life ,if you actually claim that you are alive.
There comes a time in everyone’s lives when they feel satisfied with what they have achieved. But sooner or later, you will realize the fact that as soon as you observe the nature, you will understand that you have never taken note of it. You have taken the nature for granted and all your accomplishments are merely based on the fulfillment of your own self-interests. The nature actually gives you a message that you are not a part of it because you never took care of it.
The lines “We never belonged to you,You never found us” explains the fact that the way we treat the nature and take things for granted is indeed wrong and the result is that we ourselves detach from the nature. As a result we have all the external requirements but no inner peace exists within us as a result of which we are seldom happy.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Two important lessons of life are taught in the poem; first we should never stop working, setting goals in our life and secondly we should value every little thing around us especially the nature. The language of the poem is also simple which results in readers understanding the deep meaning hidden in the simple words. For years the poem has been loved and will continue to be loved by the readers mainly because of its simplicity.
