Spike Milligan is a master in comedy writing. His poem “Have a Nice Day” is a combination of sarcasm and comedy. It is sick and twisted.
In this funny poem there are two stupid men, both of them dies because of their stupidity. Among the two stupid men there is one man who is drowning in the river and other man is standing on the shore and has a dangerous disease. A man standing on a shore sees a man drowning and shouting for help, hearing his help he asks the man to hold on. The drowning man says he is not kidding and again starts shouting for help. To this the man on the shore replies by asking him to be patient. He says he has got a disease and he is waiting for his doctor to come after that he will save the drowning man. The drowning man could not wait for long so he ask when will the doctor arrive to which he gets the answer ‘not very long.’
So the drowning man patiently waits for the doctor to arrive and in the meantime recite poems written by him. Suddenly he hears the man standing on the shore crying for help and says to the drowning man that he feels very ill. The drowning man asks him to keep calm, and even advise him to lie down and take deep breadths. But the man’s illness deteriorates further and he says to the downing man that he is dying. At the end both the men die without saving each other.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Through this poem Spike has pointed out the hypocrisy laziness and dumbness of our society. These days people are really dumb and hypocrite, they do not have the common sense of what to do and when to do certain things. Just like the man drowning, instead of forcing the man standing on the shore to help him, he agrees to wait for his doctor. He also considers himself a noble and learned man as he has written many poems. Instead of praying to God or trying to get more help, he as an idiot recites his poem.
The man standing on the shore is no better than the drowning man, when he knew the man will drown in few minutes he could have either saved him all by himself or could have called for help. But in today’s society everyone wants to be in the limelight. They take the responsibility without even knowing whether they are capable of completing the task. And even after realizing the fact that they cannot handle the task, they don’t even give the job to others, resulting in big loss to the company or society and to the country at large.
The drowning man should have insulted the man who could not save him from drowning, but instead of being rude he bids his farewell. This is what our society is doing, they are rewarding those who have got them into danger. There is need of change in our society.
