The poem ‘A child’s garden’ is a simple poem that is being described from the view of a child and how the child is kept away because of an illness and about the time he spends in his garden.
In the first stanza, it is clearly described that, according to the child, there is basically nothing wrong with him, just that he has TB. The kid does not know the seriousness of the illness and hence when he is asked to be out in the garden all day long, he wonders.
The child next describes about his garden where he spends his time the most. He says that his garden is not that very wide and is not that very beautiful, it has vehicles that passes by it sides with all kinds of noises made, that even at times it could scare the small boys in the locality. The boy then says that, when he is taken out in shaky cars and chars alongside, where he tries to explain about being taken for his treatment, he is very scared and he has no other option, other than just closing his eyes shut and sitting tight and facing it.
He then says how relaxed he feels when he is back in his small garden, and he enjoys the sight of the aero plane in the sky and the sound that the plane makes is like music played from thick piano strings. Here the kid is trying to say that, when compared to the earlier scenario, he feels the sound of a planes engine as the sound of music, which actually soothe him from the fear and feels like flying some day.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
The little boy then wishes that one day when he is free from all his illness and he is strong and healthy as he was before, then he would never opt for a car or bus as his mode of travel and would always prefer an aero plane. This shows how much he is desperate of the situation he is in and would like to get relieved from this maddens around him.
In the last stanza, he says that once he has an aero plane he would enjoy the ride over and over again and enjoy the beauty of the sky and fly between the clouds and he would just spit on the motor cars down, which clearly indicates the intensity of the hatred he has towards the mad crowd.
In this poem the poet says about how one feels when being neglected by the society and how painful the loneliness is. A beautiful poem that shows the true feelings of a man said by a child.
