The poet has presented a pleasant picture of his dreamland. He has used various imageries to create the perfect picture of the calmness and serenity of the dreamland where he wishes his heart to reside. He talks about his heart which was hidden in a bed of roses implying that he had kept his heart in a very pious and comforted place where no one could try to tamper it.
The bed that he created for his heart was softer than the slow, suggesting that this was the coziest place for his tender heart to stay. But my heart did not sleep in peace even this serene and calm place, it continued to be restless even though the rose- tree never was moved by any wind. He woke up on listening to the song of a secret bird. The song of a secret bird here refers to the pleasant voice of the poet’s love which continues to be heard in the poet’s heart like the sweet song of a chirping bird. This indicates that the poet is in love and can his heart continues to long for listening to his lover’s sweet voice even in the most quietest corners of it.
The poet asks his heart to lay quite as even the slightest of the disturbances like the wind settling down to sleep on the warm sea and the leaves sensing the sun rays running away may effect its peace. In other words, the poet is trying to tranquilize his heart in the dreamland as it is the best place that he has chosen for the peace of mind. The poet then questions his heart if it has thoughts that are hurting it inside or is there some belittled hope that lies inside which is troubling his sleep. The poet then confesses that it is nothing but the sweet voice of his lover that is singing in his heart that prevents it from sleeping.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
The poet then tries to describe his dreamland which he adores as a place whose name is not in any traveler’s list. The place has sweet fruit on the trees which has never been sold by any merchant or in any market place. It’s truly a place in his dreams which he can reach through when in sleep. There is no one to disturb the sleep of his heart in this lovely place except for the sweet voice of his lover which is singing like the song of some secret bird in his heart. Even in his dreamland, where none of the worldly things surround or influence the poet’s life, the sweet voice of his lover is still heard in his heart.
The poet then tells that he has decided to sleep for a season; or in other words, he wants to stay in this dreamland and hear nothing of the outside world. He doesn’t even want to listen to the stories of the true love or infatuation. He only wishes to listen to his lover’s sweet voice while he is in this dreamland.
