In the ancient period of Indian history we find that religion was the basis of education during the Vedic and Buddhist eras. Study and teaching of religious books was considered as the principal goal of education during these periods.
Then educational institutions were only religious institutions and there was a close relationship between education and religion. During the medieval period the Pathshalas and Maktabs were situated in temples and mosques.
The priests and Mullas of these temples and mosques used to give education to children. Religious matters figured very heavily in the courses of studies. To study religious books and to behave in society .accordingly was considered as the principal aim of education.

In European Countries as well the impact of religion on education is quite perceptible. In ancient days there, the children were given education through monasteries and churches. The chief of the monastery and the bishop of the church used to organize education for children of its locality.
During the medieval period of European history the religious viewpoint became narrow in a way. Still a close relationship between religion and education existed there. At this time Cathedral and Monastic schools were quite prevalent. These schools were under the control of the churches. Thus there was a clear impact of religion on education.
