Short Biography of Justice S.R. Das – Justice Sudhi Ranjan Das was born on October 1, 1894 and his brilliant scholastic and educational record began at the Tagore School at Shanti Niketan, followed by graduation from Bangabasi College at Calcutta, and then an LL.B., in which he obtained a first class first, from the University College in London.
He joined the Bar in 1918 from Gray Inn, London and came to Calcutta Bar in 1919. He also lectured at the University Law College. His hard work, erudition, and intellect soon saw him lead the bar.
He was appointed a Judge of the Calcutta High Court in 1942 and then a Judge of the Federal Court of India on January 20, 1950.

It was after a few days only that he became one of the judges in the first batch of Judges of the Supreme Court of India. He became the Chief Justice of India in 1956 and held the position till 1959.
He was a member of the University Grants Commission from 1962 to 1965, and the Vice-chancellor of Vishwa Bharati University from 1959 to 1965.
In November, 1961 he was appointed the Chairman of the Commission to enquire into the grievances of the Sikh Community and in November, 1963, he constituted the one-man Commission which investigated allegations of corruption and misuse of power against Chief Minister Kairon of Punjab, who lost his office as a result of his findings.
