Short Biography Justice H.J. Kania – Hon’ble Sir Harilal Jekisundas Kania became the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India after independence on August 14, 1947 and remained in office till November 5, 1951.
He was born to Jekisundas and Kusum, obtained the degree of B.A. from Sir Samaldas College, Bhavnagar.

He did his LL.B. from Government Law College, Bombay and passed the High Court Advocate (O.S.) Examination in 1915.
He was a Judge in the High Court of Bombay from 1943 to 1946 and was acting Chief Justice in Bombay High Court between 1944 and 1945. He was a Judge in Federal Court from June 20, 1946 to August 13, 1947. Justice Kania retired on November 6, 1951.
