The Organization of American System (OAS) has developed various laws and institutions for promotion and protection of human rights. It is one regional inter-governmental organization which has all sovereign State of American.
The Charter of OAS adopted at Chapultepec, Mexico in 1948, entered into force in 1951. It declared commitment for promotion of rights of individual without any distinction of race, sex, relegation, creed etc. The OAS had performed its functions through General assembly and Permanent council. Both the organs deal with human rights matters.
General assembly meets once in a years in regular session and each member has one vote in assembly. The permanent Council is composed of the Permanent representative of each member states to OAS. The charter of OAS has major legal development which includes promulgation of American declaration of Rights and Duties of man, American Convention on human rights which was adopted in 1969 and entered into force in 1978.

It also guarantees dozens of civil and political rights such as right to property, to human treatment; to fair etc., American Commission which adopted in 1970’s. Inter-American Court for Human rights, has continuous jurisdiction to adjudicate cases involving the charges that state parties has violated the American Convention on Human rights.
