Important steps for energy conservation in vehicles are:
Ten to fifteen per cent fuel (petrol and diesel) can easily be saved by the scooterists, taxi operators and bus drivers by following the measures listed below:
(1) Drive vehicles between the speeds of 40-60 kmph, which is considered the ideal driving speed. Beyond this speed extra fuel is burnt. About 40% extra mileage can be achieved by driving at 40 kmph against 80 kmph.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
(2) Avoid frequent and unnecessary increase and decrease and braking by keeping in mind the stops and curves about which you know. Even on new routes anticipate these.
(3) Drive slowly and steadily.
(4) Observe correct gear shifting and save 20% fuel. For Indian cars this schedule is as under:
ADVERTISEMENTS:
(a) City driving:
Change to 2nd gear at 11 kmph
Change to 3rd gear at 17 kmph
Change to 4th gear at 25 kmph
ADVERTISEMENTS:
(b) Highway:
Change higher gears at double the speed given above i.e.: 22 kmph, 34 kmph and 50 kmph for 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear respectively.
(c) For driving in hills or with heavy oads:
Change gears at 33 kmph, 51 kmph and 75 kmph respectively, use clutch only while changing the gears. Else it will damage clutch lining and cost extra fuel.
At railway crossings, red lights and ether areas of congestion, where vehicle has to stop for nearly a minute or more. Switch off the vehicle. Always keep the starter battery, fan belt etc. in good working condition.
