This industry also looks after the needs of defence equipment’s, railways, airways, space, flights by and meteorological departments. The Indian electronic industry is contributing a lot to the space technology as well. Bangalore has emerged as the electronic capital of India. Indian electronics industry is also contributing a lot to space technology. India has launched several indigenously built satellites including APPLE, INSAT-I series and INSAT-2 series. The remote sensing programme of the Indian Remote Sensing Organisation at Hyderabad has also gained a lot from industry.
The significant milestone of the Indian Space Programme during the year 2002-03 is the seventh launch of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR-Sriharikota on September 12, 2002 which successfully placed the 1,060 kg METSAT (Later renamed KALPANA-1) in a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). India is among the six nations of the world to attain such a capability.
In future ISRO plans to launch IRS spacecraft with better spatial resolution and capable of imaging in more spectral bands. The upcoming remote sensing satellites are the resources at Cartosat-I, Cartosat 2 and RISAT (Radar Imaging Satellite).
In addition to making a commendable contribution to telecom services, electronics industry has revolutionised paging and cellular telecom. Paging which started in the mid fifties has come a long way and has been adopted at a phenomenal pace in the market.
