It is very essential that the developing countries like India need more energy.
And for achieving this goal there are two ways either we should produce more energy or try to meet the growing needs by using the available energy in such a manner that less energy is used. So that we are able to provide energy to more people than at present.
Production of additional or increased quantity of energy is obviously not an easy task. It involves both huge expenditure as well as considerable period of time.
On the other hand it is far better and easy if energy is used in an efficient manner. By conserving energy we can have the benefits in a very short time.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
For example, for generating additional energy a lot of expenditure will have to be made on making arrangements for the same. It may take years together to get the benefits of such plants.
Whereas it is comparatively much easier to ensure efficient use of energy.
One unit of power conserved saves 1.25 units at the generating point because power is also consumed in auxiliaries and the transmission losses.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Various surveys conducted have shown that there is great scope for substantial reduction in energy consumption in India in all the sectors like industry, transport, agriculture, or household. Energy saved through conservation measures is energy produced.
Many countries like the USA, European countries; Britain, Korea and Japan have succeeded in reducing its energy consumption.
They have been able to do so by applying simple housekeeping measures and using energy efficient technologies.
It is estimated that ten to fifteen per cent energy can be saved by adopting simple housekeeping measures and another fifteen to twenty per cent can be saved by using by introducing changes in the design of the plants or the equipment.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Above all, there is an urgent need to change our attitude towards waste of energy. It should become a habit with the people whether working in an industry, factory, workshop, office or even at home to check the wastage of energy.
It is worth spending money on energy conservation measures as this amount saves energy of greater value, then the same amount can be used for generating additional energy.
Keeping these advantages in view, the Government (Department of Power) has initiated the programmes of energy conservation in industrial, agricultural, commercial and domestic sectors, which include energy audit studies, training of personnel, awareness and publicity projects.
Rising cost of the generation of energy makes it all the more necessary to conserve energy. Moreso, earth has limited resources of commercial energy which can be stretched further by conserving energy.
We must not forget that energy is at the root of civilization. We cannot live without energy.
We need it to cook our food, to light our homes at night and to run pumps and tractors in the field. All forms of transport-cars, scooters, buses, trucks, trains and aero planes – need energy to run or fly.
Industrial plants need power to run machinery that produce goods. So we can say energy saved is energy gained.
