After the cessation of World War II there was a change in the attitude of the British Government towards India because of pressure from the big powers, who favoured.
Indians independence. Apart from this there was decline in Economic and Military strength of Britain that was more interested in reconstruction and rehabilitation programmes.
The Labour Party that came into power (July 1945) supported the Congress demands. The war weary defence personnel were not prepared to toil any more on foreign soil.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Besides the Naval Mutiny and the INA trial agitation, there were, during 1945-46, numerous agitations, strikes, hartals and demonstrations all over the country, even in many Princely States. There was also large scale labour unrest all over the country. Peasant movement acquired a fresh thrust after 1945 as freedom approached.
And above all, the confident and determined mood of the Indian people no longer ready to tolerate the humiliation of alien rule was very much apparent.
