The U.N. has laid down a condition that the member- nations should extend whatever assistance, whether political, economic or military, to the U.N. if it needs such assistance. Another condition is that the U.N. should not interfere in the internal matters of a country unless its assistance is called for.

The membership of the U.N. is open to any peace- loving nation which wants to establish good relations with its neighboring countries. The U.N. has various wings to look after the various aspects of a nation’s welfare. They are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice and the cadre of secretaries whose head is the Secretary- General. The Security Council has as its objective the promotion of international peace. Its permanent members are: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the U.S. and ten non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly.
The Economic and Social Trusteeship Council works under the authority of the General Assembly. It looks after the economic and social activities of the U.N. The Council has fifty-four members. Eighteen members are elected each year by the Assembly for a three-year term.
