All the major offices, state assembly, branch offices of many central government offices, headquarters of many government departments are located in Patna. It is comparatively well- developed in terms of other cities of Bihar. It is well-connecter by rail and road from other parts of the country.
Patna has been the witness of rise and fall of empires. It is full of places of historical and tourist interests. Patna has been a centre old learning and education.
Patna is a historical city. It has been a centre of power for ages. It rose to eminence during the Mauryan period. It was known as Pataliputra during the ancient times. Third Bodh Sangiti was held in Pataliputra. It was an important centre of power during the Mauryan period. It was a prosperous city at that time. There were peace and prosperity all around. Great Greek travellers Megasthenes had written much about socio-political and economic life of the city at that time. The city continued to maintain its status even during the Gupta period. In fact, its eminence and power grew much. Nalanda, a university of world fame, was set up near Pataliputra. Its remains continue to attract archaeologists and tourists all across the country. It is a centre of great historical and archaeological importance.

There was a decline in eminence of the city during the medieval period. When the Mughal strengthened their hold on India, Patna once again gained its lost eminence. It came to be known as Azimabad during the Mughal’s regime. It had great strategic importance at that time. Built by the English this semicircular building, very much like a cup turned upside down, is now used as a granary. In addition, Kumharar, Agamkuan, etc. are places of great historical interests.
The city has made great progress with time. There are premier educational and professional institutes in Patna. Students from different parts of the region come here to pursue studies in different fields. The city has become crowded now. It is densely populated. It is big centre of trade and commerce. People come here for business purposes. Due to immigration, urbanization and industrialization, pollution has become a problem. Smokes from vehicles, industries and other sources have made the environment terribly polluted.
