There is a saying, “God made the country and man made the town.” The saying brings out the difference between country life and city life. Life in a village is simple and close to nature. In the city, life is fast and artificial.
Though India is mainly a land of villages, there are many cities as well in the country. Some of the cities, like Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata are very big. They have a population of several millions. Life in a big city has advantages as well as disadvantages.
In big cities the houses are very big. They have many storey’s. The multi- storied buildings are fitted with lifts. Houses in cities are generally well- furnished.

In a big city, the roads are broad and metal led. The modes of transport are easy, comfortable and swift. Rickshaws, buses, taxis and autos are easily available. On payment of a small fare, the buses take you from one end of the city to the other. If you are in a hurry, you can take a taxi.

Besides this, cities also provide many fine opportunities for amusement and recreation. In every city, there are a number of cinema-houses and theatres, where we can enjoy the best of pictures and dramatic performances. There are: also a number of restaurants and hotels where we can get food of the finest quality. There are also many parks and gardens where we can enjoy natural beauty at its best. The big markets of the city, especially when brilliantly lighted at night, are better than many exhibitions and fairs.
There are many other advantages of city life. There we find opportunities to mix with people from every corner of the country as also from foreign countries. We meet people who have different temparaments, different ideas, and different ways of living and thinking. In this way, our minds are broadened and our views enlarged.
Cities have many disadvantages also. In the city, we cannot enjoy the beauties of nature, as we can do in villages. City life is artificial. Man lives cut off from nature. He cannot appreciate the charms of birds and flowers, or the beauty of the sunrise and the sunset as in a village.
City life is extremely unhealthy. The sky is always covered with black clouds. The people get no opportunity to breathe free and pure air, or to enjoy clear sunshine. Besides this, food in the cities is dirty and adulterated. We cannot get pure milk and ghee. The goods sold in the market are unwholesome and unfit for consumption.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
One has to face many difficulties in a big city. Life is very costly. People have to live with pomp and show. A simple life, like that of the village, is impossible in the city. Besides, the cities are over-crowded and people get very little accommodation. Rates are high and the new-comers have to put up with a great deal of hardship. Distances are long and much time is wasted in going from one place to another.
People in the city do not have much sympathy for others. Even next door neighbours do not know each other. There is no fellow- feeling. Sympathy and close interdependence, which is a marked feature of village life, are entirely lacking in the city.
Such is the life in a big city. In spite of the disadvantages of city life, people are attracted towards cities. In a big city, there are many avenues for employment. They are centres of trade and commerce. There are big offices as well as a large number of factories and mills. People with every kind of qualification can easily find jobs to suit them. The Government should improve the condition of the villages in order to stop the rush to the big cities.
