473 words essay on Indian Woman in the New Millennium. The nineties were undoubtedly the decade of the women. There is no avenue where woman does not have her presence, no obstacle she has not overcome and no job she has not ventured into. Today’s woman has scaled every peak, both literally and figuratively.
Barely some decades ago, very few women did jobs. They were either compelled by their circumstances or they belonged to the upper strata of society. For them it was not financial reasons, it was the challenge and satisfaction that a job provides. There are no taboos any longer against working women. It is this transformation in the social scene that has enabled women to rightly take their place. Spread of education has changed the social scene. Women are also contributing to the growth of society. Despite this, progressive change in society has yet to come. It is significant to note that barely 32% of the total workforce is women. A large percentage of this workforce constitutes unskilled labour. Less than one per cent of the total working women in India hold a coveted corporate job.
Today, women are employed as teachers, doctors, judges, engineers, lawyers, scientists, parliamentarians. As a result of awakening in society, sex discrimination has declined to a great extent. The number of middle and upper class working women seeking employment is increasing these days. They are proving more successful. Our government has started many schemes to encourage women to take up gainful employment. But in the fast changing scenario, sometimes, women become the worst victim of technological advancement. They have been relegated to more labour intensive sectors and in unorganized sector of production. Women constitute around half of India’s population. India cannot be a vibrant democracy and superpower without the empowerment of this
half of the population. It is said when girls stay in school, poverty stays out. Educating the girl child helps fight poverty.

However, during last ten to fifteen years, serious efforts to counteract this trend and adopt positive steps to improve the status of women have been made. There are legal measures, government programmes, women organizations and research groups which work for the development of women. There are industrial training institutes and polytechnics for women. The government has opened separate hostels for women for low income groups to provide safe and cheap accommodation to the working women. The policy makers are aware of the actual conditions of women and active interventions by the women’s groups to remedy the situation are also thought to be right.
Economic liberalization and the new freedom mantra have thrown open a new world of market opportunities for women. There is virtually no field of enterprise that women cannot enter. So the time is right for women to put their skills and talents to good use and to follow their instincts in carving out a rewarding and successful career.
