Short Biography on Justice K.G. Balakrishnan – Justice K.G. Balakrishnan is presently the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission. He was Chief Justice of India from 14 January, 2007 till 12 May, 2010.
He was born on 12 May 1945, in poor dalit family of Thalayolaparambu village in Kottayam district of Kerala. His father Gopinath was the clerk in Kerala Judicial Service. He completed his law degree from Maharaja’s Law College and enrolled himself as an advocate in Kerala Bar Council in 1968.
He joined as Munsif Magistrate and latter on resigned from the judicial service and joined the Kerala High Court.

He was appointed as judge of Kerala High Court in 1985, and transferred to Gujarat High Court as Chief Justice in 1998. He was elevated as judge of Supreme Court in 2000.
He pronounced the controversial judgment asking the Election Commission to debar political parties which impose hartals on the public and so many land mark judgments.
