Short Biography on Justice A.S. Anand – Justice A.S. Anand was born on November 1, 1936 in Jammu (J&K State) and was educated in Jammu, Lucknow and London Universities.
He started practicing law in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1964 and became Additional Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 1975.

A year later, in 1976, he became a permanent judge of that High Court and in 1985 he was appointed as Chief Justice of the same High Court. He was transferred to Madras High Court as Chief Justice on November 1, 1989 and in November 1991 he became a judge in the Supreme Court of India, and later the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Anand has also held the post of President of the International Institute of Human Rights Society, 1996 and has been a member of the Governing Councils of the Indian Law Institute and National Law School of India University, Bangalore. He was the Chairman, National Human Rights Commission.
