Short Biography of Justice Y.V. Chandrachud – Yashwant Vishnu Chandrachud was born in Pune on July 12, 1920 and received his early education in Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya, Pune.
He graduated in 1940 from the Elphinstone College, Bombay and obtained LL.B. from the University of Bombay (Law College, Poona) in 1942. He won many a Scholarships and awards of the Bombay University like.

The Sir Nathubhai Mangaldas Legal Scholarship; the Judge Spencer Prize; Gussie K. Kanga Scholarship etc. He was enrolled as an Advocate in 1943 and practiced before Bombay High Court. He was also a part-time Professor of Law in the Government Law College, Bombay, from 1949 to 1952.
He was appointed as an Assistant Government Pleader, High Court Bombay, in 1952 and as Government Pleader in 1958 before he became a Judge of Bombay High Court on March 19, 1961. He also worked in the one-man Pay Commission for fixing pay-scales of Bombay Municipal Corporation.
