One’s love for one’s country is a natural instinct. It is an instinct of both civilized and uncivilized nations. For a Negro in the Congo Regions of Africa, an Eskimo in Tundra of Eurasia and a citizen of a modern civilized country like U.S.A, U.A.E Or Russia, his native land is the most beloved one in the world.
The essence of patriotism is the sacrifice of personal interest to public welfare. – WILLIAM H. BURNHAM,
This love is not created by any method but it is natural in him the long association of the land in which he is born, bred and made stand on his own legs is so deep rooted in his heart that he cannot but feel a deep love and affection for the land. If he does not, he is a dead man. Patriotism is a noble sentiment. It fills everyman with a spirit of sacrificing himself for the sake of his motherland. A patriot finds his\her progress in the progress of the country and his\her downfall in the country’s downfall.
A true patriot wishes his country’s progress at the cost of his own self. He is filled with pride at the achievement of the people in the past or present. Under its effect man is filled with a spirit of doing such heroic deeds which adorn the pages of history. Is there a country which has not given birth to Patriots? Whenever the soil of the land has called, whenever the motherland has demanded, the Patriots have come forward into the battlefield to sacrifice themselves for the country’s sake.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Mazzini, Garibaldi, Joan of arc, Nelson, Washington, Ho-chi-Minh etc. are some of the precious diamonds in the crown of patriotism. Mother India’s womb is so rich in this tradition that a nation can feel envious of it. King Porus, Chandra Gupta Maurya, Prithivi Raj, Guru Govind Singh, Maharana Pratap, Shivaji, Maharani Laxmibai, Tantya Tope, Kunwar Singh, Nana Sahib, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatama Gandhi, LajpatRai, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar and thousands others all are the invaluable jewels in the crown of Mother India.
Patriotism does not teach to hate others nation. It simply teaches to love one’s own country and defend it against any odds within or without the country. It is a false patriotism if it aims to hate another country. To love one’s own country is the greatest virtue. Patriotism has no selfish motive behind it. If we try to take out our selfish ends behind the patriotism it is a false patriotism. True patriotism knows no selfish motive; it knows only a selfless love and respect for history, culture and all its heritages. It should not make us feel that we are the only cream of the earth and all others are brutes. True patriotism is a virtue. Anybody should be proud of it. To raise the glory and honor of the nation is our primary duty.
