To look upon teenage as the epitome of irresponsibility has been eternal. The contrast between the glories of the past and the sordidness of the present is a frequent motif in numerous ‘wise’ discussions among greybeards. Is the past always a hindrance for the present? Has the past no role to play in shaping the present and the future?
Spring is welcomed dearly! Nothing can compensate for the glory of the past but everyone salutes the rising sun. The teens of today belong to a different time. They have different principles. The world has transformed tremendously in the last two decades.
We have to understand that we are living in a world of changing values where virtue does not lie in the middle anymore. Aggression is the new mantra because teens today firmly believe that the world does not belong to the meek. Parents are old people and cannot identify with their bold aspirations. Adults squarely blame these trends on changing values, increasing westernisation of the Indian society at the cost of traditional values and of course, peer pressure. ‘Peer’ refers to someone who is equal in one’s age, rank etc.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
If a father is wise enough to become a friend to his son, he can ensure that his son does not succumb to the ill effects of peer pressure. The generation that is past should remember that flux is the only static factor in life. A new age dawns with its share of good and bad. You have to make your choice wisely. The young need to be guided in this respect by their seniors. Seniors need to be dynamic, open- minded and young at heart.
The young too should remember that the grey hair of their fathers is a sign of wisdom and experience. There is a lot to learn from the past. The past is never dead. It is always alive and dynamic, paving the way for the present to lead to the future. To conform to a particular thought merely because the peer group obliterates borders, courtesy the Internet, and is full of life and vitality, would be a ludicrously myopic underestimation of the worth of our ancestors. One should never forget that certain values in life are eternal.
